The Throckmorton Agricultural Science Department has been hard at work this October! From hands-on projects in the shop to homecoming festivities and FFA leadership opportunities, our students have been putting their skills, creativity, and teamwork to good use. Here's a look at what our students have been up to!
Giving New Life to Old Equipment
One of our biggest projects this fall was the complete renovation of the school's livestock trailer. Students worked together to install new flooring, update the wiring and lighting, replace the tires, and finish it off with a fresh coat of Throckmorton purple paint! This project provided students with valuable hands-on experience while giving our school a trailer we can be proud to pull down the road.
Meanwhile, Coach Smith's Agricultural Mechanics classes have been busy welding, learning tool identification, and restoring the school's aerator used to maintain the football field. Students installed new wheels, individually cleaned every tine, and painted each component to bring the equipment back to life. These classes have also been hard at work constructing additional game day flags to be displayed throughout downtown Throckmorton and around the school, helping spread Greyhound pride throughout our community.
Homecoming Takes Teamwork!
Homecoming season kept our agricultural science classes especially busy this year! Our Floral Design students put their creativity to work making homecoming mums and garters for members of the community. From selecting ribbons to assembling the finished products, students gained valuable experience in floral design while helping others celebrate one of Throckmorton's favorite traditions.
But the homecoming spirit didn't stop there! Every agricultural science class contributed to the creation of our giant "Mega-Mum," which was displayed in the gym. Students also worked together stuffing tissue paper for the FFA homecoming float. These projects were a great example of how a little teamwork, creativity, and plenty of purple and gold can go a long way!
Purple Pancakes and Community Spirit
Following this year's homecoming bonfire, Throckmorton FFA members hosted their annual Purple Pancakes event at the Ag Shop as part of the chapter's Program of Activities. Members prepared and served approximately 693 pancakes to students, families, and community members!
The evening was a great opportunity for our members to give back to the community while celebrating Greyhound pride. We appreciate everyone who stopped by, grabbed a plate, and supported our chapter!
Growing the Next Generation of FFA Leaders
Our eighth-grade FFA members also had the opportunity to attend both the Wichita District and Area IV Greenhand Leadership Conferences. These events introduced our newest members to the many opportunities available through FFA, including leadership development, competitions, community service, and personal growth.
Students participated in leadership activities, met fellow Greenhands from other schools, and learned more about what it means to be part of the National FFA Organization. Experiences like these help build the foundation for future involvement and leadership within our chapter.
More Than Just an Ag Class
Whether students are turning wrenches in the shop, creating homecoming mums, serving pancakes, or developing their leadership skills, there's always something happening in the Throckmorton Agricultural Science Department.
Agricultural education is about much more than farming and ranching. It's about teaching students practical skills, encouraging responsibility, building confidence, and developing leaders who are willing to serve their school and community.
We are proud of the hard work our students continue to put into their classes and FFA activities, and we look forward to sharing even more accomplishments in the months ahead.
Until next time, keep an eye out for our next edition of Brag on Ag as we continue showcasing the great things happening in Throckmorton Ag!
