SAT Subject Test Information

  • Not very many colleges require two subject tests anymore, but many selective schools "recommend" them. If a school recommends submitting scores, we believe students should strive to do so.
  • Subject tests often cover a wider range of material than high school courses cover, but their coverage does not go as deep. Prepping for subject tests helps students get to know what matters on the exams and fill in gaps.
  • Students should not focus on percentiles. They should focus on scores. Fewer people take subject tests than take the SAT, and the tests' audience is self-selecting. Most people who opt to take the Math 2, for instance, are going to be strong in math, which is why the percentiles can look harsh. As a general rule of thumb, scores over 650 are good and scores over 700 are impressive.
  • Make sure students know that, unlike the new SAT, Subject Tests still penalize wrong answers by a quarter point.

Why should students take the SAT subject test?
